There are numerous models on the market today, varying in technical characteristics and offering different listening experiences. This article presents an application for simulating the sound response of specific headphone models by physically wearing others. In the future, for example, this application could help to guide people who already own a pair of headphones during the decision-making process of purchasing a new headphone model. However, the potential fields of application are much broader. An in-depth study of digital signal processing was carried out with the implementation of a computational model. Prior to this, an analysis was performed on impulse response measurements of specific headphones, which allowed for a better understanding of the behavior of each set of headphones. Finally, an evaluation of the entire system was conducted through a listening test. The analysis of the results showed that the software works reasonably well in replicating the target headphones. We hope that this work will stimulate further efforts in the same direction.}, article-number = {2190}, author = {Zuccante, Anna and Fiordelmondo, Alessandro and Bontempi, Pierluigi and Canazza, Sergio}, doi = {10.3390/s24072190}, issn = {1424-8220}, journal = {Sensors}, number = {7}, title = {A Signal-Processing-Based Simulation System for High-End Stereo Headsets}, url = {https://www.mdpi.com/1424-8220/24/7/2190}, volume = {24}, year = {2024}, bdsk-url-1 = {https://www.mdpi.com/1424-8220/24/7/2190}, bdsk-url-2 = {https://doi.org/10.3390/s24072190}} @article{joc24, author = {Fiordelmondo, Alessandro and Canazza, Sergio and Pretto, Niccol\'{o}}, title = {Reactivating and Preserving Interactive Multimedia Artworks: An Analog Performance from the Seventies}, year = {2024}, issue_date = {June 2024}, publisher = {Association for Computing Machinery}, address = {New York, NY, USA}, volume = {17}, number = {2}, issn = {1556-4673}, url = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3647995}, doi = {10.1145/3647995}, abstract = {Interactive multimedia art shows a complex nature as it is time- and process-based, interconnected with technology, derived by the participation of several authors (artists, technicians, performers, to name a few) and an audience, and it is strongly tied to the moment and space of the original exhibition. These characteristics make the preservation of these artworks a multifaceted process. Building on the foundations developed since the 2000s by international projects focused on preserving and restoring these new art forms, the paper proposes an original model for achieving dynamic preservation, called “the multilevel preservation model”. Since it is no longer possible to guarantee physical integrity for interactive multimedia artworks, dynamic preservation involves recording all the changes that occur to display the artworks in the future. In other words, it makes it possible to record the dynamic authenticity of artworks. The model proposes two fundamental properties: multiple layering, which allows to handle different levels of information about the artwork; multiple belongingness, which allows to represent the dynamic authenticity of the artwork at the archival level and achieving dynamic preservation. The paper demonstrates the high-level implementation of the model by presenting a case study: the reactivation and preservation of an analog video art performance from the 1970s. Established preservation strategies are inadequate since they do not cover the complex relations between analogue and digital components, their short life expectancies, and the experience produced when the artworks are activated. The existence of many projects in this research area highlights the urgency to create a preservation practice focused on the new multimedia art forms. The paper introduces the Multilevel Dynamic Preservation (MDP) model, developed at the Centro di Sonologia Computazionale (CSC) of the University of Padova, which aims to preserve multimedia artworks through different levels of information (about the components, their relationship and the activated experiences) through various exhibitions and thus as a process or a dynamic object. The model has been developed through several case studies. This paper reports a specific and complex one: the ``hybrid reactivation'' of the Il caos delle sfere, a 1999 interactive installation by Italian composer Carlo De Pirro. The entire reactivation process aims at preserving its identity, rather than simply replicating the original installation, and consists of both the replacement of old and non-functioning components components (``adaptive/update approach'') and the reactivation of original parts (``purist approach``)-hence the name ``hybrid reactivation''. Through this case study, it was possible to test and optimize the model in all aspects: from collecting old documentation and using it for reactivation to creating new documentation and archiving the entire artwork. The model allows us to preserve the artwork as a process of change, minimizing the loss of information about previous versions. Most importantly, it lets us rethink the concept of the authenticity of interactive multimedia art, shifting the focus from materiality to the experience and function that artworks activate. The model avoids recording both the last reactivation and the first exhibition as authentic. It records the process of transformation between reactivations. It is through this process that the authenticity of the artwork can be inferred.}, author = {Fiordelmondo, Alessandro and Russo, Alessandro and Pizzato, Mattia and Zecchinato, Luca and Canazza, Sergio}, doi = {10.3389/frsip.2023.1183294}, issn = {2673-8198}, journal = {Frontiers in Signal Processing}, title = {A multilevel dynamic model for documenting, reactivating and preserving interactive multimedia art}, url = {https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/frsip.2023.1183294}, volume = {3}, year = {2023}, bdsk-url-1 = {https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/frsip.2023.1183294}, bdsk-url-2 = {https://doi.org/10.3389/frsip.2023.1183294}} @conference{aes23, author = {Bosi, Marina and Canazza, Sergio and Russo, Alessandro and Pretto, Niccolo and Chiariglione, Leonardo}, booktitle = {Audio Engineering Society Conference: AES 2023 International Conference on Audio Archiving, Preservation & Restoration}, month = {Jun}, title = {An {MPAI/IEEE} {I}nternational {S}tandard for Audio: Overview of {CAE} {A}udio {R}ecording {P}reservation ({ARP}) {T}echnology}, url = {http://www.aes.org/e-lib/browse.cfm?elib=22136}, year = {2023}, bdsk-url-1 = {http://www.aes.org/e-lib/browse.cfm?elib=22136}} @ARTICLE{ieee23, author={}, journal={{IEEE} Std 3302-2022}, title={{IEEE} {S}tandard {A}doption of {M}oving {P}icture, {A}udio and {D}ata {C}oding by {A}rtificial {I}ntelligence ({MPAI}) {T}echnical {S}pecification {C}ontext-based {A}udio {E}nhanced ({CAE}) {V}ersion 1.4}, year={2023}, volume={}, number={}, pages={1-94}, doi={10.1109/IEEESTD.2023.10112597}} @Article{mti23, AUTHOR = {Bontempi, Pierluigi and Canazza, Sergio and Carnovalini, Filippo and Rod\`a, Antonio}, TITLE = {Research in Computational Expressive Music Performance and Popular Music Production: A Potential Field of Application?}, JOURNAL = {Multimodal Technologies and Interaction}, VOLUME = {7}, YEAR = {2023}, NUMBER = {2}, ARTICLE-NUMBER = {15}, URL = {https://www.mdpi.com/2414-4088/7/2/15}, ISSN = {2414-4088}, ABSTRACT = {In music, the interpreter manipulates the performance parameters in order to offer a sonic rendition of the piece that is capable of conveying specific expressive intentions. Since the 1980s, there has been growing interest in expressive music performance (EMP) and its computational modeling. This research field has two fundamental objectives: understanding the phenomenon of human musical interpretation and the automatic generation of expressive performances. Rule-based, statistical, machine, and deep learning approaches have been proposed, most of them devoted to the classical repertoire, in particular to piano pieces. On the contrary, we introduce the role of expressive performance within popular music and the contemporary ecology of pop music production based on the use of digital audio workstations (DAWs) and virtual instruments. After an analysis of the tools related to expressiveness commonly available to modern producers, we propose a detailed survey of research into the computational EMP field, highlighting the potential and limits of what is present in the literature with respect to the context of popular music, which by its nature cannot be completely superimposed to the classical one. The hues were artificially added to a series of four short video excerpts of different performances using video editing software. Over two experiments 106 participants were sorted into 4 conditions, with each viewing different combinations of musical excerpts (two excerpts with nominally high arousal and two excerpts with nominally low arousal) and hue (red or blue) combinations. Participants rated the emotional arousal depicted by each excerpt. Results indicated that the overall arousal ratings were consistent with the nominal arousal of the selected excerpts. However, hues added to video produced no significant effect on arousal ratings, contrary to predictions. This could be due to the domination of the combined effects of other channels of information (e.g., the music and player movement) over the emotional effects of the hypothesized influence of hue on perceived performance (red expected to enhance and blue to reduce arousal of the performance). To our knowledge this is the first study to investigate the impact of these hues upon perceived arousal of music performance, and has implications for musical performers and stage lighting. Further research that investigates reactions during live performance and manipulation of a wider range of lighting hues, saturation and brightness levels, and editing techniques, is recommended to further scrutinize the veracity of the findings.}, DOI = { https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2022.828699} } @Article{arc21b, AUTHOR = {Rod\`a, Antonio and {De Poli}, Giovanni and Canazza, Sergio and Sun, Zezhou and Whiting, Emily}, TITLE = {3D virtual reconstruction and sound simulation of old musical instruments}, JOURNAL = {Archeologia e Calcolatori}, VOLUME = {32}, YEAR = {2021}, NUMBER = {1}, Publisher = {Edizioni All'Insegna del Giglio s.a.s.}, URL = {http://www.archcalc.cnr.it/journal/id.php?id=oai:www.archcalc.cnr.it/journal/A_C_oai_Archive.xml:1150}, pages = {359-374}, ISSN = {2385-1953}, ABSTRACT = {Digital technologies and 3D models, nowadays largely used to document archaeological remains and to obtain hypothetical reconstructions when these remains are more or less heavily damaged, can also be powerful tools to simulate and render the acoustic response of an environment, such as the interior of a building, or an artifact, such as sounding objects or musical instruments. In order to save valuable historical recordings, the audio signal and other relevant information can be extracted from the source audio document and stored on another medium, normally a redundant digital storage system. This procedure is called ’content transfer’. It is a costly and time-consuming procedure. There are several solutions with which the cost can be reduced. One consists of picking up all tracks from a two-sided tape in one pass. This means that some tracks will be digitized forward and some backwards, to be subsequently corrected in the digital workstation. This article is concerned with the question of whether reading tracks backwards introduces unwanted effects into the signal. In particular, it investigates whether a difference can be observed between audio signals read forward or backwards and, if so, whether the difference is measurable. The results show that a difference can be observed, yet this is not enough to conclude that this “backwards” approach should not be used. They aim at providing online education to an increasingly large and heterogeneous audience: school pupils, university students or professionals who intend to acquire or develop their skill to better respond to market needs. The growing number of learners (more than 100 million globally at the moment, https://www.classcentral.com/report/mooc-stats-2019/) and courses (over 11 thousand, ibidem) reveals new and unprecedented scenarios in lifelong learning paths. Offering educational products to such an audience requires producers -- not only private individuals but also public entities -- to evaluate new teaching methods and methodologies for distance learning, in order to encourage participation and reduce their dropping out. Using gamification within an online course seems to contribute to the growth of users' participation rate, as well as to increase the course completion rate. In particular, we need interactive installations in order to encourage and stimulate visitors to learn and understand archaeological musical instruments through engagement and active participation: these instruments (i.e., interactive artifacts per se) are de facto unplayable and inaccessible to visitors, as a consequence of their preservation issues. However, presenting artifacts to the general public is a complex task for their multifaceted nature, and digital technology must not sacrifice accuracy or depth of information for the sake of entertainment. Moreover, deploying digital technology is a multidisciplinary effort that requires an interplay among different fields, from history and archaeology to information engineering and craftsmanship. In this ar- ticle, we present a methodology to relate such disciplines in order to design a digital multimedia installation that promotes archaeological musical instruments in a museum. In defining the problem, we identify four different aspects to consider: the museum collection, the museum environment, the manufacturing opportunities for the installation, and the user experience. Such aspects are integrated in a design approach that is centered on Design Thinking. The proposed methodology is exem- plified in the designing and manufacturing of an installation for a Pan flute from Egypt dated back to 700 A.D., a case in which multisensory interaction is particularly important to convey the lost sound of the instrument. We describe in detail an installation (exhibited at the Museum of Archaeological Science and Art at the University of Padova), which virtually recre- ates the Pan flute and communicates information related to its history, iconography, acoustics, and musicology. Just after the deployment of the installation, we also carried out an assessment with a group of experts in the fields of information engineering, music, musicology, and archaeology. The good results obtained demonstrate that the installation is a convenient way of interaction, simple to use and aesthetically integrated in the museum context.}, Annote = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3355395}, Author = {N. Participants also rated the same pieces using bipolar verbal scales which aimed to encompass the concepts represented by the icons (e.g., the word ``red'' for the colour red). Furthermore, the icons themselves were subjected to open-ended verbal labelling to validate the icon scale. Colour icons spontaneously evoked a cross-modal association on 67\% of occasions: blue being cool, and red/orange being warm or hot, and the icon scale had overall good face validity. Music regularly and consistently evoked multisensory associations (using the icon scale) including shapes, colours, weight, and temperatures, in addition to emotions. Cross-modal perception is indicative of music's character rather than the enjoyment of the music. The icon scale provides new insights into music perception and for applications where language skill may limit participant expression. }, Author = {E. Schubert and M. Murari and A. Rod{\`a} and S. These models are generally evaluated by comparing their predictions with actual performances, both from a performance parameter and a subjective point of view, often focusing on very specific aspects of the model. However, little is known about how listeners evaluate the generated performances and what factors influence their judgement and appreciation. In this article, we present two studies, conducted during two dedicated workshops, to start understanding how the audience judges entire performances employing different approaches to generating musical expression. In the preliminary study, 40 participants completed a questionnaire in response to five different computer-generated and computer-assisted performances, rating preference and describing the expressiveness of the performances. In the second, ``GATM'' (Gruppo di Analisi e Teoria Musicale) study, 23 participants also completed the Music Cognitive Style questionnaire. Results indicated that music systemizers tend to describe musical expression in terms of the formal aspects of the music, and music empathizers tend to report expressiveness in terms of emotions and characters. However, high systemizers did not differ from high empathizers in their mean preference score across the five pieces. We also concluded that listeners tend not to focus on the basic technical aspects of playing when judging computer-assisted and computer-generated performances. Implications for the significance of individual differences in judging musical expression are discussed.}, Author = {G. {De Poli} and S. Canazza and A. Rod\`a and E. At the same time, more and more archives storing audio and video documents face the problem of obsolescing and degrading media, which could largely benefit from the instruments and the methodologies of research in multimedia. This paper presents the methodology and the results of the Italian project REVIVAL, aimed at the development of a hardware/software platform to support the active preservation of the audio collection of the Fondazione Arena di Verona, one of the finest in Europe for the operatic genre, with a special attention on protocols and tools for quality control. On the scientific side, the most significant objectives achieved by the project are (i) the setup of a working environment inside the archive, (ii) the knowledge transfer to the archival personnel, (iii) the realization of chemical analyses on magnetic tapes in collaboration with experts in the fields of materials science and chemistry, and (iv) the development of original open-source software tools. In this sense, audio documents require specific methodologies for preserving and presenting the acoustic information and its related metadata. Much of the collective audio patrimony is stored in medium and small size public and private archives, which seldom dispose of the financial and human resources to adopt articulated methodologies as defined by the scientific community, resulting in poor and undocumented preservation campaigns that produce unreliable collections of documents which are hard to access and useless for academic studies. This article presents the experience of the research project REVIVAL, aimed at the preservation of the audio documents stored in the archive of the Fondazione Arena di Verona, Italy, with a focus on sustainable protocols for quality control and automation, as well knowledge transfer and personnel training. }, Address = {Tomar (Portugal)}, Author = {F.
