Mobile information access
Abstract
Mobile online information access regards the problem of gaining
access to online information thorough handheld devices, such as a
Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or a mobile phone. Main research
interests are the design and implementation of applications for
searching and retrieving documents through mobile clients. The
research work is on modelling three main entities are involved:
handheld devices, mobile information applications and users, and
their relationships and interactions with the aim of developing
methodological and technological tools for addressing this
problem.
Description
The main topic of the research work is on "mobile online
information access", which regards the problem of gaining access
to online information thorough handheld devices, such as a
Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or a mobile phone. Main research
interests are the design and implementation of applications for
searching and retrieving documents through mobile clients,
examples of such mobile information applications are Information
Retrieval Systems (IRS), Search Engines (SE) and Digital Libraries
(DL). In providing online information access in the mobile
scenario the three main entities are involved: handheld devices,
mobile information applications and users. The research work is on
modelling these entities and their relationships and interactions
with the aim of developing methodological and technological tools
for addressing this problem.
An initial work has been done, which introduces a general
framework, giving a comprehensive view of the features of a
handheld device and presents some techniques to overcome the
constraints imposed by handheld devices during the interaction
with users and mobile information applications, and a first
architecture for dealing with these constraints.
