The primary goal of photonics is to use light to perform functions that fall within the domains of telecommunications, sensing, information processing, and the like. The research activity at DEI touches the following main topics:
- Fiber optic communications, with special focus on linear and nonlinear propagation effects, spatial division multiplexing, distributed characterization and light amplification
- Nanophotonics and integrated devices; in particular plasmonic and dielectric metasurfaces, nanoantennas, nonlinear and tunable nanophotonic devices
- Biophotonics and OCT imaging systems
- Optical fiber sensors for environmental and structural health monitoring
